Who owns a domain? (WHOIS explained) Print

  • 0

Every domain has a record that says who registered it. Looking up that record is called a WHOIS search (say it like “who is”). It is like a public logbook for domain names.

What it can show

  • When the domain was registered and when it expires.
  • Which company it is registered through.
  • Contact details for the owner (unless privacy is switched on).

💡 Handy tip

Do not want your name and address out in public? Ask us about WHOIS privacy, which hides your personal details from the logbook. See the Domain Security & Privacy section.
